Resources for Understanding Extreme Risk Protection Orders
Recently, several jurisdictions have adopted Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws. It is a crime for a person subject to an ERPO to possess or purchase firearms. Persons subject to domestic violence protection orders (DVPOs) are also prohibited from possessing or purchasing firearms under federal law. NCPOFFC has created several resources that explain the interplay between these two types of protection orders from a survivor-centered approach. This guide lists the different tools NCPOFFC created to identify the differences between ERPOS and DVPOs so that system actors can understand and explain those differences to survivors.
