Supporting Survivors Navigate Experiences of Suicidality and Mental Health Coercion: A Guide for Helpline Advocates to Respond

last update on: 10/30/2025

This recorded series focuses on the intersection of suicidality and domestic violence within Indigenous communities. It was originally designed to support StrongHearts Helpline advocates and is made available here for all DV advocates who are interested in supporting survivors at this intersection.

These sessions explore response options for survivors who are experiencing emotional distress and suicidality by integrating the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health’s (NCDVTMH) approach with the StrongHearts Response Model. There are three parts to this curriculum:

  • Part I reviews the differences between suicide and suicidality, as well as risk and protective factors.
  • Part II explores safety strategies for a helpline advocate to utilize when a survivor is NOT in immediate danger related to suicidality.
  • Part III explores safety strategies for a helpline advocate to utilize when a survivor IS in more imminent danger of suicidality.

This training is geared toward tribal advocates who have received previous 101 domestic violence training.
